Precise Coupling Detection via RFID

The truck and semi-trailer are paired using RFID technology. Compared to Bluetooth systems, for example, RFID consistently prevents misidentifications caused by nearby or passing vehicles: Only the directly coupled semi-trailer is detected, immediately upon coupling and while the vehicle is still at a standstill, even before it begins to move.

Use in yard and shunting vehicles

RFID detection can also be used on yard movers and shunting vehicles on the premises. When moving containers and semi-trailers, each coupling operation is automatically recorded. This ensures complete traceability of all units at the depot.

No additional telematics unit required

The coupling detection system works without an additional telematics unit or wiring in the trailer. The trailer is simply equipped with a compact RFID tag; no wiring is required. Identification is performed via an antenna mounted on the tractor, which is directly connected to the telematics unit there. When coupling and uncoupling, the tag is automatically read, and the trailer is uniquely assigned to the truck in the system. This configuration also works with complex body types featuring tail lifts and through-loading hatches.

Other areas of application

Thanks to its modular design, RFID technology can also be easily retrofitted to existing telematics units. Automatic assignment proves valuable in any situation where interactions between objects or vehicle components must be fully documented:

  • Loading Ramp Management: Precise documentation of which semi-trailer or trailer is parked at which ramp position and for how long.
  • Forklifts: Automatic tracking of which forklift is currently loaded onto which trailer.
  • Concrete Transport & Processing: Precise tracking on the construction site of which concrete mixer delivers material to which concrete pump and at what time.

How long does it take to install it in the trailer?

Installing the telematics unit in the trailer depends on various factors. The telematics unit with a direct EBS connection, the “trendbeeTrailer easy” is simply connected to the EBS modulator using the supplied cable and secured to the vehicle. That’s all there is to it. If the trailer telematics unit is to be connected to both the EBS and the refrigeration unit, more steps are naturally required. Our installation team will be happy to assist you with the installation, provide guidance to your staff, or, upon request, handle the entire installation process.
